Cold rolled steel round bar/rod 1045 is normally used for industrial, machine, and tool applications. 1045 is a commonly used low carbon steel alloy with good strength, ductility, and ease of machining. AISI 1045 carbon steel stock is available in full size and custom cut lengths.
1045 Carbon Steel Q+T Heat Treatment Process
Quenching and tempering is a dual heat treatment process of quenching and high-temperature tempering, aimed at achieving good comprehensive mechanical properties of the workpiece.
Quenched and tempered steel can be divided into two categories: carbon quenched and tempered steel and alloy quenched and tempered steel. Whether it is carbon steel or alloy steel, its carbon content is strictly controlled. If the carbon content is too high, although the strength of the quenched and tempered workpiece is high, the toughness is not enough. If the carbon content is too low, the toughness will increase and the strength will be insufficient. To achieve good comprehensive performance of the quenched and tempered parts, the carbon content is generally controlled between 0.30% and 0.50%.
When quenching and tempering, it is required that the entire cross-section of the workpiece be quenched to obtain a microstructure mainly composed of fine needle shaped quenched martensite. By high-temperature tempering, a microstructure dominated by uniformly tempered martensite is obtained.

1045 carbon steel is a high-quality carbon structural steel with a carbon content of over 0.4%, which makes it have good cutting performance. After quenching and tempering, the hardness range of 1045 steel is HRC20 to HRC30, which ensures its superior mechanical properties. In addition, 1045 carbon steel hardness after quenching can reach around HRC50, and the highest can even reach HRC55, but such high hardness will reduce its mechanical properties. In order to achieve good comprehensive performance, 45 steel is usually subjected to quenching and tempering treatment, and surface quenching is carried out on this basis to improve surface hardness.
In addition, according to the GB/T699-1999 standard, the recommended heat treatment system for 45 steel includes 850 ℃ normalizing, 840 ℃ quenching, and 600 ℃ tempering to meet specific performance requirements, such as yield strength ≥ 355MPa, tensile strength ≥ 600MPa, etc. The hardness of quenched and tempered 1045 steel ranges from HRC20 to HRC30, which not only ensures the superiority of its mechanical properties but also maintains good processing performance.
