15-5PH vs 17-4PH Stainless Steel

Comparison of 17-4PH and 15-5PH Materials

17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation hardened stainless steel. Has high strength, high hardness, good welding performance and corrosion resistance. It has been widely promoted and applied in the valve, shaft and chemical fiber industries, as well as high-strength components with certain corrosion resistance requirements.

17-4PH precipitation hardened steel grade with added copper. Used for manufacturing shaft and steam turbine components.
17-4PH precipitation hardened martensitic stainless steel composed of copper, niobium/columbium has low carbon content, better corrosion resistance and weldability than general martensitic stainless steel. Similar to 18-8 stainless steel, it has a simple heat treatment process and good machinability, but it is difficult to meet the requirements of deep cold processing.
Metallographic structure: The structural feature is precipitation hardening type.

15-5PH is a martensitic, precipitation hardened, chromium nickel copper stainless steel with excellent surface smoothness and dimensional stability. Good processing technology, excellent mechanical properties, and resistance to general corrosive environments. As early as the mid-1990s, it began to promote this steel bell and was one of the earliest companies in Shanghai to produce and operate this type of steel. This steel has good strength, toughness and ductility, as well as lateral, hardness and corrosion resistance, which are comparable to 304 stainless steel. May be used to solve or heat treat conditions to obtain various therapeutic properties.

If used for high temperatures of 700 ℃, 15-5PH should be competent, as it is both austenitic stainless steel and widely used austenitic heat strength steel. However, it is best not to exceed 750 ℃. Its heat treatment is solid solution treatment, which means heating to 1000 ℃ or above, holding for a certain period of time before water quenching, and then using aging treatment above the operating temperature of 60-100 ℃.
