d2 tool steel is a versatile high-carbon, high-chromium, air-hardening tool steel that is characterized by a relatively high attainable hardness and numerous, large, chromium-rich alloy carbides in the microstructure. These carbides provide good resistance to wear from sliding contact with other metals and abrasive materials. Although other steels with improved toughness or improved wear resistance are available, d2 tool steel round bar provides an effective combination of wear resistance and toughness, tool performance, price, and a wide variety of product forms.

Sichuan Huitai produced d2 tool steel round bar is generally produced using two smelting processes: EAF+LF+VD and EAF+LF+VD+ESR.
For the LF+VD refining process, strengthening the deoxidation during the LF furnace reduction period and ensuring the vacuum degassing effect of the VD furnace are the main process measures to reduce oxygen content. Joint deoxidation is adopted in the LF furnace to control the alkalinity of the white slag to be ≥ 4 and the vacuum degree of the VD furnace to be ≥ 67Pa. Compared with the average oxygen content in normal production, the oxygen content in D2 tool steel has decreased by 50.88%.
