What should we pay attention to during the heat treatment of M2 high speed steel?

During the heat treatment process, it is very critical to accurately control parameters such as heating temperature, holding time, cooling rate, and tempering treatment to obtain the best hardness and performance. At the same time, it is also necessary to select a suitable heat treatment process according to the specific application scenario and requirements.

Temperature Control

'The appropriate heating temperature is one of the important factors to ensure that the desired hardness is achieved. The heating temperature of M2 high-speed steel should be between 1150℃ and 1250℃. Too low a temperature will lead to incomplete transformation of the structure and the hardness cannot meet the requirements; too high a temperature may cause excessive burning and deformation'.

Holding Time

'The holding time refers to the length of time the blade needs to be kept at the heating temperature. The holding time of M2 high speed steel should be between 15 minutes and 30 minutes. Too short a time may cause the grains to fail to grow completely and the hardness is insufficient; too long a time may cause excessive growth of the grains, resulting in increased brittleness'.

Cooling Rate

'The cooling rate has an important influence on hardness. Rapid cooling can promote the transformation of internal austenite into martensite, thereby increasing hardness. Commonly used cooling media include air cooling, oil cooling and salt bath cooling. When selecting a cooling medium, it needs to be determined according to specific requirements and process conditions'.

Tempering

'Tempering is the process of reheating and cooling after quenching, the purpose of which is to eliminate the internal stress generated during quenching and improve toughness and corrosion resistance. The choice of tempering temperature and time should be determined according to the specific situation to balance the requirements of hardness and toughness'.
