4140 steel is a medium carbon alloy steel, also commonly known as AISI 4140 or SAE 4140. SAE4140 steel is one of the main materials used to produce seamless steel pipes. Here are some product details about 4140 steel tubing:

  • Chemical composition: The chemical composition of 4140 steel pipes generally includes:

Carbon (C) 0.38%-0.43%
Silicon (Si) 0.15%-0.35%
Manganese (Mn) 0.75%-1.0%
Chromium (Cr) 0.75%-1.0%
Molybdenum (Mo) 0.15%-0.25%
And a small amount of nickel (Ni) and other elements, phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content should usually be controlled at a low level.

4140 steel tubing have high strength and toughness. After proper heat treatment, it can reach

The following is a common production process of 4140 steel tubes:
1.Raw material preparation
Select 4140 alloy steel billets that meet the requirements to ensure that their chemical composition and quality meet the standards.
2.Heating
Put the billet in a heating furnace for heating to reach a suitable rolling temperature, usually between 1100-1250℃.
3.Piercing
The heated billet is punched into a hollow rough tube by a piercing machine.
4.Rolling
The rough tube is rolled using a tube rolling mill to make its wall thickness and outer diameter meet the initial requirements.
5.Sizing or reducing
The outer diameter of the rolled steel pipe is accurately adjusted by a sizing machine or a reducing machine to obtain the specified dimensional accuracy.
6.Heat treatment
The steel pipe is quenched and tempered to improve its mechanical properties and organizational structure. The quenching temperature is generally 840-880℃, followed by tempering, and the tempering temperature is usually 540-680℃.
7.Finishing
Includes straightening, cutting heads and tails, and non-destructive testing (such as ultrasonic testing, eddy current testing, etc.) to ensure the straightness and internal defects of the steel pipe.
8.Surface treatment
According to the needs, surface treatments such as pickling, phosphating, and oiling are carried out to improve the corrosion resistance and appearance quality of the steel pipe.
9.Finished product inspection
The finished steel pipe is subjected to the final quality inspection, including chemical composition analysis, mechanical property testing, dimensional inspection, etc., to ensure that the steel pipe meets the relevant standards and customer requirements.
10.Packaging and storage
The qualified steel pipes are packaged to protect the steel pipes from damage during transportation and storage, and are properly stored.
